Arsenal make enquiry regarding Juventus star Weston McKennie

According to Italian media, Arsenal has made an initial approach to sign Weston McKennie from Juventus.

The Gunners have already signed Leandro Trossard from Brighton for £27 million this month, and Spezia center-back Jakub Kiwior is on the verge of joining for £17.5 million.

Mikel Arteta wants to bring in a new central midfielder before the end of the January transfer window, and the Premier League leaders have made a move for McKennie, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

According to the report, Arsenal has contacted the 24-year-agent, old’s but no contact has been made with Juventus.

It’s also been reported that Juventus are willing to sell McKennie this month for a fee of around €25 million (£22 million) plus bonuses.

McKennie has been a regular for Juventus this season, making 13 starts in Serie A and demonstrating his versatility by playing in various midfield roles.

Last week, it was reported in Italy that Manchester United had proposed a swap deal with Juventus for McKennie in 2021, in which the US international would be exchanged for Donny van de Beek.

This month, Tottenham and Aston Villa have also been linked with a move for McKennie.

McKennie, who started every match for the US men’s national team at the Qatar World Cup, has played 15 league games this season and 21 overall, but is regarded as ‘the most expendable’ member of Allegri’s squad despite his versatility.

Aston Villa, Fulham, and Bournemouth are also said to be interested, but the 41-cap international has expressed no interest because he wants to join a ‘top club’.

As manager Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his squad in the January transfer window, a move to the league-leading Gunners could tempt former Schalke star McKennie.

Meanwhile, Juventus is currently ninth in Serie A after a 15-point deduction last week.

The Italian club was accused of ‘financial irregularities’ and ‘false accounting’ regarding previous transfers.
