Louis van Gaal has claimed that the Netherlands have a better chance to win the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup if Memphis Depay is fully fit.

Depay headed into the World Cup half-fit after he newly recovered from an injury that kept him out of Barcelona’s last few games before the international break.

The former Manchester United forward came on as a second-half substitute against Senegal and Ecuador but failed to make any impact as the Dutch side managed a 2-0 win over the former and a 1-1 draw against the latter.

Van Gaal has claimed that the Netherlands need Memphis Depay at his very best if they fancy winning the World Cup, hence the reason the former United boss hasn’t risked starting the Barca forward in their opening two games.

Speaking ahead of their last group stage game against Qatar on Tuesday, Van Gaal said: “We won’t take risks with Memphis. Because if we want to win the World Cup we need Memphis.

“Vincent Janssen played because Memphis got injured. That’s his role. He could play when another player gets injured. He did it well.”

Memphis Depay has earlier admitted that the Netherlands have more chances of winning the World Cup if he’s fit and starting games.
