Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea midfield duo of Connor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-cheek.

Newcastle United are exploring their options as the January transfer window comes to a close, with a focus on adding to their midfield. With Jonjo Shelvey poised to join Nottingham Forest, the Magpies are looking to bring in reinforcements to bolster their ranks.

Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek of Chelsea are reportedly on Newcastle’s radar. Gallagher has been the subject of interest from a number of clubs, with Everton having had a £45m bid for the England international rejected. Despite the ongoing interest, it remains uncertain whether Gallagher will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge amid Chelsea’s pursuit of Enzo Fernandez.

Eddie Howe is reportedly a fan of Gallagher and, according to The Telegraph, Newcastle are among the clubs considering a move for the 22-year-old. However, Chelsea are reportedly reluctant to loan Gallagher to St James’ Park as they view Newcastle as a direct rival for European places this season.

It’s reported that Chelsea have set an asking price of £50m for Gallagher, which is more than Newcastle is willing to spend this month, given their recent £45m acquisition of Anthony Gordon from Everton. A permanent deal for Gallagher could be more likely in the summer, though the Magpies are also considering a move for Loftus-Cheek to add to their squad for the rest of the season.

However, Loftus-Cheek’s wages, reportedly at £150,000 per week, could prove to be a stumbling block to any deal. Newcastle has also been linked with a move for Sheffield United’s Sander Berge, though he is expected to join Fulham instead.

The Magpies have already made one signing on deadline day, securing the services of Harrison Ashby from West Ham United. With only hours remaining in the transfer window, Newcastle will need to act quickly if they hope to add to their squad before the deadline.
