Erik ten hag has praised Marcus Rashford as ‘unstoppable’ after scoring his 18th goal of the season as Man Utd defeated Nottingham Forest 3-0 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

Man United were unfortunate losers last weekend at Arsenal as a late goal from Eddie Nketiah handed Ten Hag his first defeat in 10 games, with Arteta’s men running away as 3-2 winners.

Speaking after his side’s dominant 3-0 away win at Forest, Ten Hag lauded his side’s ability to bounce back from the loss at Arsenal with a fine first leg victory.

“I’m happy with the performance especially losing late to Arsenal, and I think over 90 minutes we controlled it. There was one moment that could have changed the game and that is where we need to improve but overall we controlled it.

“They changed the system and we didn’t anticipate that. It can’t happen. That is still a moment where we have to learn and improve as a team if you want to be top. Those moments can’t happen.

“We almost let them come into the game and we can’t allow an opponent to get back into the game when we started so good. We dictated it totally then in one moment it can change. We need to avoid that.

“I think in the second half we were much more composed and we tracked them. It was much better.

Commenting on Marcus Rashford’s performance, Ten Hag said “It was a great opening goal. I have seen some good moments and dynamics now. I am happy with Marcus and his performance and development.

“He is growing. He is responsible for that and needs to keep that process going. You need to be creative in the final third and do some crazy stuff.”

“He is unstoppable if we get him in the right positions. He’s very important to us and we have to keep working together to make sure he’s in a good state of mind so he can get better and better, and keep scoring beautiful goals like tonight”

The emphatic victory gives United a golden chance to end their trophy drought stretching back to 2017.

Forest thought they had equalized but Sam Surridge had an effort ruled offside by VAR. Fernandes’ seventh of the season in the 89th minute was a hammer blow which left Steve Cooper with his head in his hands after his side failed to score with 13 shots.

Man United will hope to seal their place in the Carabao Cup final next week when they host Forest in the second leg of the tie.
