The 2021/22 football season is over in most parts of Europe. However, a lot of action remains ongoing especially as national teams gear up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Mundial for the first time is going to take place in Qatar. The tournament usually takes place in June and July. However, this year it will take place in November and December.
At the tournament, the top five excelling national teams will represent Africa. The countries from the continent set to feature at the world cup include Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon, Tunisia, and Morocco.
Before the World Cup, we focus on Cameroon to throw the spotlight on five promising players that could glitter for the Indomitable Lions.
Indeed, Cameroon has lots of talented players, but this piece seeks to whet the appetite for players to look out for.
While these players are not guaranteed a place in the national team, they have done enough to qualify for a place in the world cup squad.

Christopher Maurice Wooh

Current club: FC Lens

Position: Defender

Age: 20

Christopher Maurice was born in french but he has Cameroonian roots. Wooh earned his maiden national team call-up to play for the Indomitable Lions this month.
Despite his lack of national team experience, his performance shows that he is a strong contender for the Cameroon defense.
In the recently concluded French Ligue 1, Wooh made 14 appearances with two assists.
The 20-year-old defender has shown signs of having strong versatility. He has been backed to break into the team and looks set to take his chances as a promising player. It will come in handy for the Indomitable Lions not only in the AFCON qualifiers but at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as

Nouhou Tolo

Current club: Seattle Sounders

Position: Defender

Age: 24

Based in the USA where he plays his football, Nouhou Tolo made his debut for the Cameroon national team in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification clash against Zambia in November 2017 that ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
Since then, he has been in and out of the team but never disappoints when he has the chance to wear the jersey of his national team.
In the USA, Nouhou Tolo plays for Seattle Sounders where he has in the past year particularly cemented his place in defense as a key player of the team.
The left-back earlier this month starred in his position to help the Seattle Sounders to beat Pumas UNAM from Mexico to become champions of the CONCACAF Champions League.
He may not have over 20 caps for Cameroon but Nouhou Tolo certainly has shown promise and is not only expected to be vital for his national team in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers but at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well.

Jérôme Onguéné

Current club: Red Bull Salzburg

Position: Defender

Age: 24

The next on the list is defender Jérôme Onguéné. Standing at 1.86m, the center-back is a ball-playing defender who ticks all the boxes of a modern-day defender.
Having risen through the ranks of the French youth national teams, he finally opted to switch to play for Cameroon when his home country came calling.
After marking his debut for Cameroon in a 1-0 win over Malawi in October 2017, he has gone on to win seven caps.
He deservedly earned a place in the squad of the Indomitable Lions that finished third at the end of the delayed 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Indeed he has been left out of the latest squad for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, but the fact remains that he has the quality and has a big chance of making the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.
Currently playing his football in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg, Jérôme Onguéné made a good account of himself in the just-ended campaign. From 10 appearances, he assisted two goals and was a force to reckon with whenever he was named in his team’s starting eleven.
If he stays at Salzburg next season, he will be playing in the Uefa Champions League, a platform that will give him the chance to audition for a return to the Cameroon squad before the world cup in Qatar.

Martin Hongla

Current club: Royal Antwerp

Position: Defensive midfielder

Age: 24

Cameroon has always had a midfield of players with so much energy. In recent times Zambo Anguisa has been the name tasked with playing the duties of the ‘engine’ of the team.
Whiles, there is no doubt he is one of the best in his positions, Cameroon can be happy there is a player called Martin Hongla.
Contracted to Belgian side Royal Antwerp, the defensive midfielder spent the 2021/22 football season playing in Italy where he signed for Hellas Verona.
All season, the midfielder fought for the team and evidently was a key man for the team that finished 9th on the Italian Serie A standings at the end of the season.
On the final matchday of the season, Martin Hongla finished the campaign in style when he scored for Hellas Verona in the thrilling 3-3 contest.
It is therefore no surprise that he has been included in the Cameroon squad for the upcoming matches in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
Aged 24, Martin Hongla has a time on his side and has been tipped as the next big thing to hold down the midfield of his national team.

Olivier Ntcham

Current club: Swansea City

Position: Attacking midfielder

Age: 26

Although he may not have any cap with the Cameroon national team, the inclusion of Olivier Ntcham in the latest squad of the Indomitable Lions has given fans something to look forward to.
The attacking sensation was invited for the world cup playoff match against Algeria last March but could not receive the opportunity to feature in both legs.
Back in the Cameroon squad as the side prepares for the first phase of the qualifiers for the 2023 AFCON, Olivier Ntcham will hope to finally have the opportunity to play for the country of his parents.
In England where he played for EFL side Swansea City, the forward featured in as many as 37 games. In a campaign where he impressed, he finished with four goals and three assists.
Now at the end of the season, the 26-year-old promising attacker can rightfully make a case for a starting role in the Cameroon national team in the upcoming game against Burundi.
After that game, there will be more opportunities for these promising players in scheduled international friendly matches to be played by Cameroon as part of preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
At the Mundial, the Indomitable Lions are in Group G where they will face the likes of Brazil, Serbia, and Switzerland.
