Kenya may not be in the conversation of countries tagged as powerhouses of African football, but certainly, the country in recent years has come good on having some talented footballers.

Currently, the male senior national team nicknamed the Harambee Stars are gearing up for a crunch meeting against giants Cameroon.

That game in June will be the first of six to be played in Group C of the qualifiers for the 2023 Total

Energies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ahead of that game, it has become evident from the ongoing league season in Kenya that some of the best players in the top-flight league can be relied on.

In this article, we look at the top five best players in the Kenya Premier League

Humphrey Mieno Ochieng

Club: Tusker FC

Nationality: Kenya

Position: Defender

A veteran who keeps growing with every game he plays, Humphrey Mieno Ochieng has proven in games he has played this season in the Kenya Premier League that he still got it.

The center-back who plays for Tusker FC has been part of the reason why the club could finish the season with the league title in the basket.

He has led at the back to the delight of his teammates and fought like a lion to ensure his team defended very well in games when he was present to help their quest to bag crucial points.

Undoubtedly, Humphrey Mieno Ochieng who formerly played for Club Africain and Gor Mahia has been a top performer this season.

Patrick Matasi

Club: Tusker FC

Nationality: Kenya

Position: Goalkeeper

Another player of Tusker FC comes in second place. This time around the focus is on goalkeeper Patrick Matasi. Not known for his height, the shot-stopper has enviable reflexes and the organization of his defense is most at times unmatched.

This season, the goalkeeper has helped his team’s defense immensely and as a result, the side boast of having conceded the least number of goals in the Kenyan Premier League.

Tusker FC has conceded just 15 goals in the division and trails Kagamega Homeboys by three points. Whiles the team aims to win the league title, Patrick Matasi will have a big role to play.

At the moment, the former St. George goalkeeper looks to be the safest pair of hands in the Kenyan Premier League and looks set for an invitation to the national team for the AFCON qualifiers.

David Okoth

Club: Kakamega Homeboyz

Nationality: Kenya

Position: Midfielder

Full of energy and goals, David Okoth has received a lot of applause this season. His prowess in front of goal is a key factor as to why Kakamega Homeboyz is top of the Kenya Premier League table and tagged as favorites to emerge as champions.

Although he is not leading the goal scorer’s chart, he has been outstanding in front of goals and could well finish the season with the golden boot.

After 30 matchdays in the Kenya Premier League, David Okoth has found the back of the net 10 times and chipped in with a few assists.

He is one of Kenya’s top stars at the moment and is reportedly courting interest from abroad.

Clifton Miheso

Club: Police FC

Nationality: Kenya

Position: Attacker

He may not play for any of the Kenya Premier League title contenders but Clifton Miheso was never going to be stopped from shinning this season. The Police FC striker has been lethal in front of the goal and could even steal the goal king award from the clear favorites.

The 29-year-old currently is the joint top scorer of the league with 11 goals and appears not to be ready to take his foot off the gas.

He has a good record with the Kenya national team and looks set to represent his national team in the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

Felix Oluoch

Club: Kariobangi Sharks Nationality: Kenya

Position: Striker

Unlikely to win the Kenya Premier League title with Kariobangi Sharks, Felix Oluoch could end the ongoing 2021/22 football season with personal glory. The young midfielder besides fueling his team has also been a monstrous finisher.

His 11 goals leave him top of the goal kick chart with his team looking up to him to try and secure points to finish the season in the top four of the division.

While it will be difficult, it is highly possible if Felix Oluoch stays sharp in front of the goal to get the goals needed to win games.

There are just four matches left to play in the 2021/22 Kenya Premier League. Any of the teams in the top four of the standings could finish the campaign as champions depending on the side is able to accrue most of the available 12 points and results from other games go in its favor.

Similarly, the goal king award is up for grabs.
