Top 5 players in the Uganda Premier League

There have been some top-performing players in the ongoing Uganda Premier League. We take a look at five of these players who have been in top form throughout the season for their respective clubs.

César Lobi Manzoki

Club: Vipers SC

Age: 25

Position: Forward

Nationality: Central Africa Republic

The Vipers striker is enjoying an incredible season and is currently leading the top scorer’s chart with 18 goals across all competitions this season having played 2526 minutes for the club. The striker from the Central Africa Republic has scored 13 goals in the Uganda Premier League after making 23 appearances for Vipers. The 27-year-old has been in terrific form for Vipers contributing more points for the league leaders than any player. Vipers have currently opened a 15-point lead at the summit of the league table behind second-place Kampala City after match-day 29. The Central African Republic forward has been the go-to get man for Vipers and is hoping to help Vipers cruise to another league title. Manzoki is likely to make his country’s squad for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers which start later this month.

Muhammed Shaban

Club: Onduparaka FC

Age: 24

Position: Forward 

Nationality: Uganda

The 24-year-old has 14 goals in 23 matches for Onduparaka FC in the ongoing Uganda Premier League campaign. Onduparaka FC is in 10th place on the Uganda league table with 34 points thanks to the Ugandan striker who has carried the team all season. The former Raja Casablanca forward has been key for Onduparaka FC with his impressive performances. Onduparaka FC is hoping to avoid relegation. Shaban was part of the Uganda team that played at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

Yunus Sentamu

Club: Vipers SC

Age: 27

Position: Striker 

Nationality: Uganda

The Vipers Sports Club striker scored 16 goals in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League to win the golden boot award on his return to the domestic front. Sentamu returned to the Uganda Premier League for the 2020/21 season after leaving Albania side FK Tirana on a free transfer. He joined Viper Sports Club on a two-year deal. The striker beat competition from Eric Kenzo Kambale of Express club with just one goal to win the Goal King award. In the ongoing 2021-22 season, he has scored 12 goals in 24 appearances for Vipers as they lead the league table with 71 points. Sentamu is hoping to defend his goal king award this season. The forward comes with vital experience having turned out for AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo, CS Sfaxien of Tunisia, Finland’s Ilves, and later on to KF Tirana of Albania.

Erick Kambale

Club:  Express

Age:22 

Position: Attacker 

Nationality: Uganda

The 24-year-old has scored eight goals in 23 appearances in the Uganda Premier League. Kambale scored 15 goals last season for Express and must catch up with seven more goals to equal his tally this season. The Uganda international has been in fine form for Express and hoping to help his team make the top four with just a few games to end the season. Express is currently placed sixth on the league table with 46 points after match week 29.

Shafiq Kagimu

Club: Uganda Revenue Authority

Age: 23

Position: Midfielder 

Nationality: Uganda

Shafik Kagimu led URA to finish second in the league with some impressive performances. He was the club’s best player of the season and was nominated for best player of the season. The 23-year-old has scored five goals in 25 appearances in the 2021/22 Uganda Premier League. URA SC is chasing qualification to Africa next season and is currently placed third on the table with 52 points. The Kampala University graduate will play a crucial role in ensuring the team secures qualifications. Capped 13 times by Uganda at the international level, the midfielder has impressed both club and country in what has been an exciting career so far for the former Zebra FC starlet.

Yunus Sentamu and Muhammed Shaban will be competing for the Goal king award considering the number of goals scored in the ongoing campaign. Uganda head coach Milutin Sredojević is expected to name his squad for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with the players listed above in his team. Uganda Cranes are pitted in Group F against Algeria, Niger, and neighboring Tanzania.
