Colombia will be looking for a second win
It was a narrow win for Colombia in their opening match of the Copa America Group B matches as they beat Ecuador by 1-0. Coach Rueda rested his star player Luis Muriel and didn’t start with his teammate in Atalanta Duvan Zapata but they still grabbed all three points of the game.
The goal was scored in the 42nd minute of the first half after a brilliantly executed free-kick which saw both teams share possession of the ball almost equally. In the second half, Colombia sat back and relied on the counterattacks allowing their opponents to enjoy 69% of the ball possession and seven goal attempts but to no avail.
Colombia Key points
- Colombia are undefeated in three games
- Colombia have won three of their last five matches against Venezuela
- Colombia have scored in all of their last four matches
Venezuela likely to play another defensive game
As they arrived in Brazil last week, 12 of the Venezuelan team’s players and staff tested positive for covid so many players had to be replaced and they ended up with a very inexperienced squad. A defeat by a much bigger goal margin was expected in their opening match against Brazil.
Portuguese coach Peseiro played a 5-4-1 formation to minimize the damage. It didn’t stop Brazil from having 18 goal attempts seven of them on target. Peseiro will adopt a similar tactic against Colombia as well. They may have more chances up front than they did against Brazil if they commit more players in the counters.
Venezuela Key Points
- Venezuela have lost five of their last ten matches
- One clean sheet is what Venezuela managed in their last seven matches
- 1.4 goals per game were conceded by Venezuela in their last ten matches
Colombia vs Venezuela Prediction
Colombia played for the three points in the first match. They scored in the first half and defended their lead in the second. They had the 6-1 loss at the back of their mind last November and needed to hit back with a win.
Venezuela look to be helpless in this tournament and their coach will play as defensively as possible to avoid defeats by big margins.
We think Colombia have two of the best attackers in the Copa in Zapata and Muriel. If they play together they will pose a very big threat to any defense.
We think Colombia will score in both halves.
