Having qualified for the Europa League last season, the expectations on Koln to perform again this time around would’ve been fairly high, but, as of yet, the Rhineland club have flattered too deceive. Four matches in and Peter Stoger are without a win, or even a single point. After what the worse possible start, this match against Frankfurt is already a massive game for the hosts.

It could also be construed that Frankfurt have struggled at the start of this season, though, even if they’ve not hit top gear yet, they’ve fared considerably better than their hosts, picking up four points from their first four matches. Niko Kovac’s men have struggled for goals, but their performances have certainly not been without promise. Against a Koln side who’ve looked nothing short of abysmal at times, the visitors will probably fancy their chances here.

From a betting point of view, goals are the way to play this fixture. The two bets that stand out are ‘Both Teams to Score’ and ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ at odds of 19/20 and 13/10 respectively, two prices which, if we examine this pair closely, look fairly generous.

Koln might be in something of a mini-crisis right now, but, if we look past their results, which have of course been shocking, it’s easy to think that their goal-scoring woes could come to an end in this fixture. Firstly, the hosts have actually created more than reasonable chances in all of their matches, especially in their only home match so far. Stoger’s men did lose their previous home fixture (1-3) against Hamburg, but they were not without an abundance of clear-cut chances. Not capitalising on such opportunities isn’t exactly a positive but a continuation of such creativity will result in goals sooner or later. The hosts certainly won’t be without chances against a Frankfurt who struggled to contain Augsburg last time out.

One area where improvement doesn’t appear to be forthcoming for the hosts is at the back. Defensively, Koln have started the season very poorly and it would be no surprise if such woes continued here against a Frankfurt side who’ve looked threatening in the final third. The visitors may well have scored just two goals in four matches, but punters should not discount them on this basis. Kovac’s side will certainly get chances against a Koln side who will almost definitely go forward in search of goals, and it’s a good bet that they take a sizeable portion of them. After four matches, only four teams in the entire division have managed more shots than Frankfurt; to say that Wednesday’s visitors have been unlucky as far as converting goes is something of an understatement. The chances have been there prior to now but, for one reason or another, goals have remained largely elusive; however, this match against defensively inept opposition provides the perfect opportunity for Die Adler to find their scoring touch.

Ultimately, with these two teams both being somewhat top-heavy, plenty of attacking action is expected to unfold in this match. Based on the fact that both should fancy their chances, it’s hard to imagine this match not being littered with both chances and goals. Both teams can put an end to their attacking woes in what should certainly be a high-scoring encounter.
