14:25 Cheltenham: Champagne West – 9/4, 2 point win

Phillip Hobbs looks to have an excellent chance of landing this grade 3 handicap with his unexposed chaser, Champagne West, who is looking more of a course specialist every time he visits Cheltenham.

Having never finished outside the place money in five runs here at Cheltenham, the eight year old gelding got his chasing career off to a great start when taking two novice events around this course in good style at the start of last season, and Hobbs’ charge looks to have come back in similarly fine fettle this time around. The form of what was a very promising 2nd (C&D) on his reappearance behind the fast improving, Village Vic last time out suggests Champagne West could be a very good chaser at this level.

Based on that run last time out, the gelding simply has to be involved at the business end of the race here and in truth this looks a great opportunity to kick-start his second season over fences with a win. The progressive Tenor Nivernais looks to be one of the chief threats in this field and given the fact he finished a length behind the selection in the race last time – having had the benefit of a run already – there is nothing to suggest that form will be reversed, especially when we consider that Champagne West is likely to be that bit sharper himself.

All in all, in a race that looks less competitive than the last, Phillip Hobbs’ gelding – who should now be fitter – really ought to be going well again and is fancied to go one place better than his reappearance run.

15:25 Lingfield: Si Senor – 11/4, 2 point win

The Ed Vaughan trained, Si Senor may well be almost exclusively raced at Kempton, where he is thrice a winner, but that shouldn’t put punters off backing the five year old, who looks as though he can go very well here at Lingfield.

Having raced only 14 times, the son of Dansili is still relatively unexposed and has for some time now signaled as though a race of this nature should be well within his grasp. After comfortably winning two low-key handicaps (class 5 & 4) – one after the other – over a mile at Kempton back in 2014, Si Senor has failed to revisit the winners enclosure; however, he has run with plenty of credit on several occasions since.

He finished 2nd in a 10 runner event and then 5th in an 18 runner event on his last two races of 2015 which goes someway to suggesting that he could be capable of taking a race such as today’s.

This race looks certainly no harder than the contests where the selection ran with plenty of credit, and if anything it looks less competitive in terms of strength and depth. Considering he has also run well following a break before, the fact that this event comes after a 120 day lay-off bodes well.

Following a couple of decent runs in defeat, there is a feeling that the horse may well have been put away for the latter months of 2015 with a race like this in mind. Top all-weather jockey, Adam Kirby, takes the ride which is never a bad thing and it would be no surprise if Si Senor was able to get seriously involved today.
