Tuesday 6th December doesn’t exactly bring with it the best racing, but there are some interesting contests nonetheless. Across the two National Hunt cards, there are four runners who, at decent prices, warrant support.

13:00 Uttoxeter – Akula @ 16/1 (each-way)

The 13:00 Uttoxeter is a decent little race where many of the entrants could easily go well; however, one who might just have been overlooked in the betting, certainly in the early market at least, is Akula.

Barry Leavy’s nine-year-old has slipped down the weights and could potentially be let in here off a mark of just 101. In decent races, this gelding has often run with plenty of credit (off a higher mark) and could go well.

Having finished 2nd three times last season, including in this contest off 6lbs higher, Akula has some decent form to his name. OK, he might not have won since his Class 5 C&D win back in March 2015 – where he proved he was far too good for that level – but he’s turned in some nice performances and his mark continues to fall.

His 4th place finish in a Haydock Class 3 on reappearance was certainly nothing special, but it was a tough race and it’s fancied that he was entered there just to get a run under his belt. He should obviously strip fitter for that reappearance and now drops into a lesser affair.

Off his lowest mark for some time, Akula could easily run a big race and, at 16’s, he’s well worth the each-way support.

13:10 Fontwell – Mother Meldrum @ 9/2

The 13:10 at Fontwell is seemingly all about short-priced favourite Remember Forever, but he’s far from a class act, nor is a solid performer, and, at such a short price, assuming that he’ll back up his win last time out from 8lbs higher could be quite foolish.

The one to oppose with is Mother Meldrum. Victor Dartnall’s mare has some decent form to her name and drops into a weak-looking race.

Since winning two Class 5 event’s back in March, this seven-year-old has failed to go in again, although she’s only run four times since and has performed with credit on each occasion. Having made her seasonal reappearance at Ffos Las over timber (finished 4th), she’s twice run at Exeter, turning in a solid 2nd place finish over hurdles, before finishing 4th on what was only her second ever start over fences last time out. Considering this was only a second go over fences for Mother Meldrum, she ran with plenty of promise, jumping well enough and staying on late in the day.

In terms of quality, this contest looks a fair bit easier – there are a number of runners who’ve offered very little in the way of promise. With her rider taking off a handy 7lbs, in a very winnable contest, she’s expected to go well.

15:10 Fontwell – Killabraher Cross @ 14/1 (each-way)

This certainly isn’t the easiest race to assess and there are a number who could be considered as big players. Both Slidecheck and Midnight Folie could be there or thereabouts on some of their better form, although both look particularly short in vying for early market favouritism.

One runner, who, although inconsistent, does look too big in the betting is Killabraher Cross. Paddy Butler’s gelding has a few decent pieces of form to his name and it wouldn’t be the greatest surprise if he was to run very well in what looks a weak affair.

The nine-year-old is twice a winner at this level, both of which came off higher handicap marks. It would be fair to say that this horse is inconsistent and he’s a hard one to catch on the right day; however, he’s shown a clear tendency for going well when reasonably fresh. He’s often been tried with one or two weeks in between races but this is something that hasn’t worked. Coming into this race, he’s now had a break of 32 days and could be seen to better effect for it.

In a race where there are several question marks over numerous entrants, Killabraher Cross is one who’s proven he can win at this level, on this type of ground and over this distance. It’s very much a case of him being on a going day or not, but, at odds of 14/1, he’s well worth an each-way punt in the hope that he’s able to put in one of his better displays. After all, if he was able to repeat the form of either of his previous Class 5 wins, he’d surely go close.

15:40 Fontwell – Whatthebutlersaw @ 7/1 (8/1 SP)

The final race at Fontwell sees no less than 15 runners go to post, although, in fairness, it would appear that several have very little going for them. One who is of major interest in this field, though, is the lightly raced Whatthebutlersaw.

The Ffrench Davis trained gelding has been very lightly campaigned during his career, but has some nice performances under his belt and could easily run a big race here.

Having won a National Hunt Flat contest in good fashion back in 2014, the seven-year-old has shaped with promise in a couple of novice hurdles, but has clearly encountered training problems along the way. Since making his debut around two and a half years ago, he’s had just eight races, running just once since May 2015.

After being off the track for 527 days, the gelding returned to action at Exeter at the beginning of November and ran an absolute stormer. OK, he finished 3rd, but he was only beaten three parts of a length. Considering this was his first outing in over 500 days, it was a very pleasing run. He’s since been given just over a month to freshen up from that contest and if capable of building on that then he ought to go close here.

His performance last time out, coupled with some of his previous novice runs, suggest he’s one of the better horses in this event and it wouldn’t take much more than he’s already shown to get seriously involved.

In a race that certainly won’t take much winning, Whatthebutlersaw, who should now have more about him in terms of fitness, won’t need much more than a repeat of his form last time out and, at odds of 7/1, is well worth a go.
