Will Zalatoris to Win (each-way)

I’ll go out on a limb and say this; Will Zalatoris will win a PGA Tour event this season, and I’m betting that it’s going to be one of the biggest events of all. Since bursting onto the scene in 2021, the 25-year-old has shown himself to be capable of cutting the mustard in some high-profile tournaments, finishing second at the Masters.

In recent weeks, Zalatoris has played some steady golf, making five cuts in a row, finishing T7 or better in three of those. Moreover, the man who is now inside the world’s top 30 ranks as the third-best player on tour in terms of strokes gained: tee-to-green, which bodes well ahead of a trip to a course that demands strong tee-to-green play. We’re also talking about the best player on the PGA Tour in terms of strokes gained: approach, which again is hugely positive ahead of a tournament where approach shots are key.

This supremely talented player, who has performed on several occasions as if his time is near, has the game to compete this week, and at juicy odds, is worth taking to come out on top.

Will Zalatoris Top 20 Finish

I’m doubling down on Zalatoris here. The youngster really does appear to have lots in favour, and having finished T22 on his first visit to the Stadium Course and TPC Sawgrass last season, he’s well worth backing to hit the top 20, which is something that he’s already done five times during the current campaign.

Abraham Ancer Top 20 Finish

As steady as they come, Abraham Ancer is another player that ought to relish the test presented by TPC Sawgrass. The Mexican is about as accurate as it gets off the tee, which has held him in good stead on previous visits to this venue.

12th in 2019 and 22nd last season, Ancer has proven that he can play some solid golf around the Stadium Course, and his efforts on those occasions have positioned him as the fifth best in the field in terms of strokes gained: total at this venue in the last five seasons. Such a stat isn’t easy to ignore.

In recent weeks, it hasn’t really happened for the man who is ranked 21st in the world, but a return to a track that suits his style of play should spark a return to form.

Preliminary review and match prediction for THE PLAYERS

Rich in history and won by some of game’s greatest ever, THE PLAYERS prize is almost as sought-after as any of the four majors. It’s therefore no surprise that the field is jam-packed with top-end talent this week. World number one Jon Rahm is in attendance, alongside world number two Collin Morikawa and the rapidly rising Viktor Hovland, who is now ranked third in the world.

None of the top ten players according to the Official World Golf Rankings will miss out this week, while only two of the top 20 will be absent. No fewer than 21 major winners will be present at Sawgrass, so the quality really is stacked high, meaning that the competition should be the fiercest we’ve seen for a while.

In keeping with the last few weeks, where it’s been very hard for players to tame courses, with venues such as PGA National and Bay Hill providing stiff tests, TPC Sawgrass will really test players in terms of accuracy, both from the tee and on approach. Strokes gained: tee-to-green is a stat to keep an eye on, as those who’ve won here in recent times have all been just about the best in the field in that area come Sunday evening.

Designed by Pete Dye, the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, with its smaller than average greens, demands dialled in approach play. The iconic Par 3 17th, which features an island green, provides the perfect example why players must be accurate, particularly with the shorter irons/wedges. Those players gaining an above average number of strokes on approach should be well equipped to thrive.
