Wednesday’s EFL Trophy match sees League Two strugglers Wycombe Wanders take on a revived Coventry City from League One.

Wycombe are struggling towards the bottom of League Two and are just one point clear of the relegation places. Gareth Ainsworth’s side run on an extremely tight budget and therefore this is no surprise, however, Wycombe had actually been on an excellent run in late September and early October with three straight league wins. Unfortunately for them, this run has derailed and they have failed to win in the league since 1st October, although they had some respite at the weekend with an FA Cup victory against fellow League Two side Portsmouth.

Whilst this run looks bad on the face of it, when you examine Wycombe’s home form it seems pretty good. However, it must be said that they lost their last match at home against Barnet and had not played at home since winning against West Ham United U23s in the EFL Trophy on October 4th.

Defensively, the Chairboys are not terrible and their record of 21 goals conceded actually rivals most teams in the league and even betters that of third-placed Doncaster Rovers. It is in the attacking third where Ainsworth’s team struggle with just 16 goals scored. This of course is no surprise, strikers are the most expensive players to buy and Wycombe do not have the budget to bring in a 20-goal-a-season striker.

Wanderers will be encouraged by the fact they have a number of league matches coming up against teams in-and-around them near the bottom of the table. If they pick up wins against those rivals then they will boost themselves up the table.

After a terrible start to the League One season with no wins under former manager Tony Mowbray, Mark Venus has come in on a caretaker basis at Coventry City and rekindled their season. Venus won his first match away at Port Vale and since then has won three out of five matches with just the one defeat. This has lifted the Sky Blues from bottom of the league up to 18th and three points clear of the relegation places – something which many would have thought impossible just over a month ago.

The ownership problems with Sisu at Coventry and the chaos surrounding their home stadium of the Ricoh Arena still place uncertainty on the club’s future, but at least things are progressing on the pitch.

It is certainly Coventry’s home form that has helped them stay away from the relegation places and they are still undefeated at the Ricoh this season – that even stretches back to Mowbray’s days. Form on the road has been a bit of a different issue with the Sky Blues still winning just one match away from home under Venus, although they will be encouraged by the fact they have lost just once and drawn twice.

Despite their relatively poor away record, I expect this confident Coventry side to take the game to lowly League Two Wycombe and beat them at Adams Park. The odds on that are incredibly favourable (much to my surprise) at 13/8.
