German FA clears Schlupp to play for Ghana directly

Germany-born striker Jeffery Schlupp has been cleared to play for Ghana without a nationality switch, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

The German Football Federation (DFB) has written to the Ghana Football Association that theLeicester City attacker has not played for the German youth side.

This means he can play for the Black Stars on Saturday against Sierra Leone without needing a nationality switch.

There were doubts over his straight eligibility for Ghana which prompted the Ghana FA to move fast to avoid any surprises.

Schlupp was called up to play for Germany’s youth side four months ago but he did not feature for the European side.

The DFB through its official Joti Chatzialexiou has now written to the GFA to confirm that he did not play for the German youth side despite the call-up.

The 18-year-old Hamburg-born teenager says he always hoped to play for Ghana, where his parents originally hail from.

Ghana face Sierra Leone on Saturday and Gabon on Tuesday, in preparation for their Africa Cup of Nations challenge in the New Year.

That means if Schlupp impresses, and makes it into their final squad for the tournament, he could be missing from City for almost a month.
