BREAKING NEWS: Ghana new boy Antoine Semenyo ruled out of World Cup play-off against Nigeria

Published on: 21 March 2022

Ghana will miss the services of Bristol City striker Antoine Elorm Semenyo for the 2022 World Cup play-off against Nigeria this week, GHANAsoccernet.com understands

The youngster was handed his maiden invitation to the Black Stars for the upcoming games but will have to wait to make his Ghana debut some other time.

Semenyo has not joined up with the Ghana squad for the double-header qualifiers against Nigeria after suffering a recurrence of a previous knee injury in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against West Brom.

Semenyo was substituted in the sixth minute in City's draw against West Bromwich on Saturday and after the game, City manager Nigel Pearson revealed the 22-year-old had "jarred his knee".

The 22-year-old striker was assessed on Sunday and wasn’t declared fit enough to play in either of the two-legged games against the Super Eagles on March 25 and March 29.

It’s desperately heartbreaking for the young striker who is having a fantastic season for the Robins in the Championship this season.

Semenyo has bagged 6 goals and provided 8 assists in 25 appearances for his club this campaign in the English second-tier.

He was set to play a part for the Black Stars in these fixtures in which the winner will earn a place at the Mundial in Qatar later this year.

Semenyo who was named Championship Player of the Month for January, will have to put his international dreams on hold for the meantime and focus on a recovery to full fitness.
