Bruce confirms Newcastle talks

Steve Bruce has revealed he has spoken to Newcastle United about succeeding Rafael Benitez as the club's manager.

The Magpies have been on the lookout for a new boss since failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Benitez, who left at the end of June and has subsequently been appointed as head coach of Dalian Yifang in China.

Newcastle had hoped to have a new manager in place before the squad flew out to China for the Premier League Asia Trophy on Saturday.

The club are keen to appointment boyhood Newcastle fan Bruce but have found reaching a compensation agreement with his current team, Sheffield Wednesday, difficult.

The Owls have informed Newcastle they want more than the £1million compensation figure they are currently offering and so Bruce remains in charge of the Championship side for the foreseeable future.

The former Sunderland and Hull City boss was in the dugout for Sheffield Wednesday's pre-season game at Lincoln City and afterwards confirmed talks regarding a move to St James' Park were ongoing.

Bruce told Sky Sports News: "It's in the hands of the two clubs at the moment.

"There is nothing really to talk about until the two clubs reach some sort of a compromise."

When asked about talks with Newcastle, he added: "It has happened so quickly that I have to take stock of the situation, it's in the hands of both clubs and I will see where it develops over the next 24 to 48 hours.

"It's football and has come from nowhere in the last two or three days, so we will see what this weekend brings."

Managerless Newcastle are currently 11/4 to be relegated this season, while they are 5/2 to finish in the top half of the Premier League table.

Meanwhile, after a strong end to last season under Bruce, Sheffield Wednesday are 6/1 to be promoted from the Championship.
