Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes is auctioning off his match shirt and boots from Sunday's derby victory over rivals City in a bid to raise £720,000 for two seriously-ill children.

The Portuguese midfielder scored the opener at the Etihad as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men claimed the bragging rights over City and ended their 21-game winning streak at the weekend.

Fernandes, 26, is now raffling off his shirt and boots from Sunday's win, and will donate the money to siblings Leonor, five, and eight-year-old Jaime, who both suffer from a rare form cancer.

The United midfielder is hoping to make a significant contribution towards the Portuguese youngsters' treatment at a US hospital, which is set to cost their family over a million dollars.

Fernandes launched the campaign via the GoGetFunding.com website and has received donations from 1,744 people so far.

Writing on his GoGetFunding page, Fernandes said: 'I've recently been made aware of Leonor and Jaime's situation. Five-year-old Leonor and Jaime, who is eight, are siblings and were both diagnosed with a very rare cancer - neuroblastoma.

'Leonor's cancer was detected in her first year of life. Since then she has had all kinds of treatments and surgeries.

'Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, bone marrow autotransplantation, immunotherapy, ovary cyst and kidney removal... all these over the last four years.

'Jaime, her brother, was diagnosed with the same disease around Christmas last year.

'Being a father myself, this kind of story really moves you. I can't even imagine the pain and agony their parents must be living right now.'

Fernandes continued: 'The good news is the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (USA) has been working on an innovative treatment with very positive outcomes.

'However, being a very rare disease with high research costs, this treatment is very expensive: $1million for the two kids.

'To help them I've decided to give the boots and shirt I wore in today's [Sunday] match against Manchester City.'

Fernandes has raised close to £20,000 in less than 24 hours, with tickets selling for £5 apiece.

The United playmaker set Solskjaer's men on the way to an impressive victory at champions-elect City after converting from the spot in just the second minute.

That, incredibly, took Fernandes' tally to 23 goals for the season while Luke Shaw scored the other to seal the three points, which closed the gap on City at the top to 11 points.

Fernandes' heart-warming campaign to raise funds for the critically-ill children comes after he gained hero status in his hometown of Porto, having helped distribute food and vital hygiene supplies at the height of the coronavirus pandemic last year.
