BUNDES - Kimmich decision to not get vaccinated sparks debate

Published on: 26 October 2021

Joshua Kimmich will be the center of attention for Bayern Munich when they face Moenchengladbach on Wednesday, amid a raging discussion in Germany over the footballer's decision not to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

The 26-year-old is expected to play for Bayern Munich in a German Cup second-round clash, but his refusal to get vaccinated has drew criticism from Berlin's administration.

Despite having created the "We Kick Corona" foundation last year, Kimmich announced on Saturday that he decided against being vaccinated.

"It's not that I'm a denier of the coronavirus or an opponent of vaccination," said Kimmich, who based his decision on "personal concerns".

Steffen Seibert, a spokesperson for Caretaker Chancellor Angela Merkel, commented on the sportsman's attitude, saying that he hopes the footballer will "let all available information regarding the vaccines allowed in the EU sink in."

Kimmich should get immunized, according to Siebert, because he is "someone who is looked up to by millions" as a role model.
