Caf Confederation Cup: Five things we learned from Kotoko's 1-1 draw with Al Hilal
Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko blew a huge opportunity to qualify for the knockout stage of Caf Confederation Cup as they were held 1-1 by Al Hilal in Kumasi.

The Porcupine Warriors would have secured qualification with a win after Nkana beat Zesco 3-0 earlier on Sunday.

They must now win their last game against Zesco and hope the match between Nkana and Al Hilal produces a winner to qualify.

Below are five things we learned from the match.

Asante Kotoko's defensive problems not solved.

After keeping their first clean sheet last week against Nkana, one thought CK Akonnor had finally found the solution to the team's defensive problems. But on Sunday the problems reared its ugly head as they made preventable errors and were carved open easily by the Sudanese. The first goal conceded was a result of poor marking in the box. Nobody was on the flanks to stop the cross while goalscorer Waleed Hamid was left completely unmarked to just head home.

Songne Yacouba finally scores at home.

Despite his huge contribution to attacking department of Kotoko, his lack of goals at home has been a worry for fans. Yacouba scored for the first time in the competition in Kumasi and the goal could prove crucial ahead of the final matchday.

Kwame Bonsu performed poorly.

Ahead of the game, there were talks about Kwame Bonsu earning a call-up into the national team for the dead rubber Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya. Deservedly, Bonsu has been one of the stars in Kotoko's team in the campaign but his performance on Sunday left a lot to be desired about. He was in subdued mode and could exert no influence in the game. CK Akonnor had no option than to replace him with experience Nii Adjei with 15 minutes left on the clock. If Kotoko want to progress, they will need Bonsu at his very best in Zambia against Zesco.

Felix Annan again to the rescue.

Goalkeeper Felix Annan was the difference yet again. At 1-0, Annan made several key saves to keep Kotoko in the contest. But for him, Hilal would have wrapped up the win before Yacouba's goal. It will come as no surprise if Annan makes Ghana's squad for upcoming Afcon in Egypt because his performances justify it.

CK Akonnor not afraid to take risks.

Unlike many Ghanaian coaches, CK Akonnor proved one thing on Sunday that he is brave. His decision to take off a midfielder Martin Antwi and bring on a striker Obed Owusu few minutes after Hilal's goal was impressive. Most coaches would've waited until 20 to 15 minutes to end proceedings before making such a tactical switch but Akonnor did in the first half and that opened the chances for Kotoko. Owusu's presence caused havoc with Emmanuel Gyamfi, Fatawu Shafiu and Yacouba having more sight at goal.
