CAF lauds Ghana's contribution to African football

Confederation of African Football vice president Almamy Kabele Camara has lauded Ghana for its contribution towards the development of African football.

Camara, who was addressing the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Tuesday, also praised Ghana for its "very good sporting and political credentials."

"Ghana has played a leading role in the development of African football at both club andnational team levels," he said after leading a delegation to the GFA head office on afamiliarization visit ahead of the African football awards (Glo/CAF awards night) in Accra onFriday.

The CAF vice president, who was accompanied by CAF General Secretary Hicham El Amraniand Director of Finance Heba Bakr, also highlighted the individual contribution of KwesiNyantakyi since assuming his role on the executive committee of the African football governingbody this year.

Ghana has won the Africa Cup of Nations four times (in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982), making itthe second most successful team in the contest's history behind Egypt.

"The Black Stars, in particular, have not only represented Ghana very well, but also the entire African continent," he added.

Ghana reached the second round of the 2006 FIFA World Cup and became the third Africanteam in history to reach the quarterfinals stage at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The Black Stars were also quarterfinalists at the 2010 African Nations Cup in Angola.

Ghana's Olympic team, the Black Meteors, in 1992 became the first African country to win a medal at football at the Olympic Games.
