CAF President Patrice Motsepe arrived in Accra early on Saturday morning to a hero’s welcome, greeted by Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku and jubilant football fans.
Motsepe, the billionaire South African businessman who leads African football’s governing body, touched down ahead of a packed programme that includes chairing the CAF Executive Committee meeting and attending the final of the African Schools Football Championship.
Waving Ghanaian flags and singing, excited supporters gathered at Kotoka International Airport to cheer Motsepe’s arrival, reflecting the growing enthusiasm around his visit.
Later today, Motsepe is scheduled to meet Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama for high-level discussions focused on the development of football in Ghana and across the continent. Key topics are expected to include strategies for using football to empower African youth and drive wider social development.
His arrival comes at a crucial moment for CAF, with the Executive Committee set to confirm major leadership appointments following last month’s fiercely contested elections.
The Ghanaian capital will host key decisions aimed at reshaping CAF’s governance structure.
Motsepe’s presence also underlines the rising importance of school-level football in CAF’s agenda. The African Schools Football Championship, whose final will be played on Saturday, is one of CAF’s flagship initiatives to nurture the next generation of talent.
For Ghana, hosting the CAF President offers a significant boost, with GFA boss Kurt Okraku poised for elevation to one of CAF’s Vice-President roles as the body seeks to restore regional balance after recent political tensions.
Motsepe’s visit symbolises renewed collaboration between CAF and its member nations, with hopes high that fresh initiatives will drive football development and opportunity for Africa’s youth.
