Captain Mensah issues Ghana rallying call

Ghana captain John Mensah has issued a rallying call to his team and country to unite and work together after the trauma of being held by Sudan in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Sunderland central defender, handed the captain's armband after Stephen Appiah's retirement, urged to kick-start their qualifying campaign into life against Congo in Brazzaville in March next year.

The disappointing result generated negative comments from pundits and fans as the World Cup finalists failed to get past the tough Sudanese.

Mensah insists everyone must now look forward and start to repair the damage after Sunday's 0-0 with Sudan in Kumasi.

Mensah said: "Very quickly we've got to get on with the job of rescuing our Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after a very unlucky game.

"It will be a tough match and Congo feel it is a game they can win so we have to pull together very quickly as a group and take things forward."

The absence of ex-coach Milovan Rajevac and the issue of the unpaid bonuses of the Black Stars has been blamed for the poor performance but Mensah insists it is not the cause of the disappointing result.

"I think the morale in camp was high before and after the game. Rajevac is a special person and a lot of people have been down and disappointed but the world of football moves on very quickly and people get on with the job.

"We have not had a lot of time to sit around pondering about the situation. We've got a real task ahead of us but there are still plenty of points to be won and that's what we're going for."

"As the captain I hope I can form a link between the players and staff and the fans and lead from the front on the pitch to bring the desired results in future matches."

Ghana will play Congo in their next game in March next year.
