Carlo Ancelotti admits Real Madrid were 'still on holiday' in Getafe defeat

Published on: 03 January 2022

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has joked that his side were still on their winter break as they fell to a sloppy 1-0 defeat to Getafe on Sunday.

Eder Militao, who has been one of the team's standout players this season, was caught in possession for Enes Unal's early opener and Real then failed to test Getafe goalkeeper David Soria for almost the entirety of the game.

After the match, Ancelotti confessed that his players did not look mentally ready for the game and joked that he could still be in holiday mode himself.

"We reacted ten minutes after the goal, then we were nervous and lost balls and duels," Ancelotti said (via Marca). "We gave the first goal to a player who usually stands out.

"I think there is not much to say about this game. We stayed on vacation for one day too long. It seemed like the team that ended 2021, with less concentration and less commitment.

"A draw would have been fair because we didn't deserve to lose, but we gave away a goal and lost. It could be a wake-up call, the team looked like they were on vacation.

"After training [on Friday], I told the players that I really liked how they looked. They were plugged in, switched on and competing. I'm not trying to criticise them, maybe I was also on vacation today.

"Nevertheless, we remain league leaders, without any real issues, and we continue with a lot of motivation."

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also echoed Ancelotti's suggestions that this result came as a shock to the system for Real.

"It is not easy to win and this is a wake-up call to keep winning," he said (via Mundo Deportivo). "We know that La Liga is played until May and is not won in January, so we have to keep going.

"Hopefully we will add two victories, on Wednesday [against Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey third round] and against Valencia at home. The games that we have drawn or lost have been against teams that defended very deep, apart from Espanyol, who beat us fair and square.

"You have to analyse the game with the team and move on."
