Carpi 1-1 Palermo: Mancosu keeps Biancorossi unbeaten run alive

Palermo escaped from the Stadio Alberto Braglia with a 1-1 draw against a determined Carpi side on Saturday afternoon in Serie A.

Alberto Gilardino opened the scoring midway through the first period only for Matteo Mancosu to level from the penalty spot during the second half.

A quiet first half sprung into life after 22 minutes when a neat bit of interplay from the Rosanero saw Oscar Hiljemark play a pass to Gilardino, who was in space near the penalty spot. The veteran was composed enough to roll the ball into the bottom corner past the wrong-footed Vid Belec to give his side the lead; his 184th Serie A goal lifting him to joint 11th in the all-time list.

Palermo looked comfortable for the remainder of the first half, their strong defensive display restricting the hosts to a number of shots from distance. Gaetano Letizia’s effort that fizzed just wide was the best of those attempts but Stefano Sorrentino was rarely given cause for alarm.

The Biancorossi continued to labour for chances after the break, despite regular pressure towards Sorrentino’s goal. With his side looking uninspired in attack, Fabrizio Castori shuffled his pack, with Matteo Mancosu coming on as a substutute.

Mancosu made an almost immediate impact, as he burst into the Rosanero penalty area only to be felled by Edoardo Goldaniga. After considerable delay while players recriminated with one another, the former Bologna man stepped up to rifle home the spot kick himself, his first goal since the opening day of the season.

Buoyed by their equaliser, Carpi pressed forward with even more intensity looking for a winner, but a Mancosu header straight into the hands of Sorrentino was their only reward. Palermo looked happy to sit back and absorb pressure, trying to strike on the counter-attack, but found the Carpi defence in no mood to allow them another opportunity.

The point extends Carpi’s unbeaten run to five, but they remain well below the relegation line, while Palermo remain 14th after the draw.
