Carpi 2-1 Sampdoria: Mbakogu’s penalty gives hosts a deserved and much needed victory

Published on: 17 January 2016

In a high tempo match, Carpi claimed their first victory of 2016 against Sampdoria, with the Blucerchiati losing from their second match in a row.

Before the match Carpi honoured Lorenzo Pasciuti, whose goal last week against Udinese made him the first player to score a goal in four different categories with the same team.

Sampdoria started the match on the attack, with Carpi defending hard especially on Antonio Cassano, Samp’s main offensive creator.

Despite the tight marking, Cassano scored with a header after 14 minutes. Unfortunately for him, he was offside and the goal was disallowed.

After that risk, Carpi tried hard to attack, however Sampdoria had the better chances to score on counter attacks.

Carpi’s goalkeeper Vid Belec made a brilliant double save on Antonio Cassano and on the rebound of Fernando, keeping the result even at minute 24.

A minute later, again Belec denied Sampdoria, when he saved on Matias Silvestre’s header from a corner kick.

However, Carpi took the lead after 27 minutes when Gaetano Letizia’s shot bounced on Lorenzo Lollo whose shot from the edge of the penalty area beat Emiliano Viviano.

The home side tried to hold the advantage, but they managed to resist only for five minutes. A great ball by Fernando Soriano put Joaquin Correa one-on-one with Belec and the Argentine’s shot this time went past the goalkeeper. Thirty-three minutes into the first half, the match is again even.

The final part of the first half saw both teams pushing for a goal. First is Antonio Cassano, who tried to capitalise on a mistake from Riccardo Gagliolo but his shot only hit the post.

Aftwards, Antonio Di Gaudio’s long shot is blocked by Viviano at minutes 39, while Jerry Mbakogu’s shot was saved by Pedro Pereira.

The second half started with a very aggressive Carpi. The pressing of Carpi produced two fouls on Eder by Gagliolo and Isaac Cofie, with the second one booked and a foul of Mbakogu on Zukanovic.

Moreover, the pressing gained Carpi a penalty. Di Gaudio is tackled by Fernando inside the penalty area and the referee whistled penalty kick for Carpi after 54 minutes. From the penalty spot Mbakogu didn’t miss and Carpi once again took the lead.

After the second goal, Sampdoria began to attack more and more, however Carpi on the counter remained dangerous.

First a powerful shot of Mbakogu is saved by Viviano, then Belec anticipated Eder, who received a great pass by Cassano. At minute 63 Fernando hit the post from a free kick and seconds later Kevin Lasagna missed a goal on the counter.

Silvestre saved the Blucerchiati kicking away the ball after Mbakogu dribbled Viviano, while Muriel had the best chance to equalise but once again Belec saved Carpi.

As time passed, both teams became more and more nervous. As a result Gagliolo picked a red card after 86 minutes, leaving Carpi one man down for the last minutes of the match.

However despite this, Carpi held on to secure a very important victory in their battle against relegation. Now Carpi have 17 points and sit 17th, while Sampdoria are 14th with 23 points.
