Ghanaian Premier League campaigners AshantiGold have been thrown into deep crisis after the club's President Dr Kwaku  'Champion' Frimpong resigned on Thursday over insults poured on him by the club's supporters.

Champion needed police escort on Wednesday before he was able to leave the Obuasi stadium as fans hooted at his G-Wagon Benz SUV following the home defeat to Bechem.

The business mogul leaves the Obuasi-based club after just two seasons in charge following the park takeover of the club from the mining firm AngloGold Ashanti.

The majority shareholder of the Miners threw in the towel on Thursday just a day after the club lost 1-0 at home against little-fancied Bechem United on Wednesday.

The result left AshGold fifth on the league table, dropping from the third position that the club were after their perfect start to the season that saw them topping the table at a point.

But after the raucous reaction of the supporters following Wednesday's result the President of Ashantigold Kwaku Frimpong has announced his decision to leave with immediate effect.

"I thank everyone at Ashgold for the opportunity to lead the club. The fans should take their club now," Kwaku Frimpong told Fox FM on Thursday morning.

"I cannot continue to be president anymore and yesterday what the fans did, I say enough is enough."

The business mogul is credited for the club's good showing since he took over two seasons ago after buying some experienced players to invigorate the squad.

The founder of the Champion Divine Clinic was able to attract some top players both home and abroad as well as recruiting top foreign coaches to boost the side.

However some recent bad results including their hammering by WAFA sparked anger among the supporters who called for him to leave the club.

With mining firm AngloGold Ashanti reluctant to fund the club going forward it will be difficult to find the needed leadership and investment to move the club forward.
