The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kurt Okraku has confirmed to government that its Soccer Centre of Excellence is ready for use as an isolation centre for the country's fight against the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Okraku revealed this Thursday at the media briefing organised by the Ministry of Information to update Ghanaians on government’s efforts to stem the spread of the novel viral disease.

He said this is part of the GFA’s support for government’s fight against Covid-19 as the federation offers the facility to be used free of charge.

This is a massive gesture by the GFA as its free offer of the 250-bed facility to the government in the fight against the pandemic will win hearts for the federation.

Following the announcement last week that the country’s football governing body was offering the facility in Prampram for use as an isolation centre, the youth of Prampram embarked on a demonstration claiming the disease could spread to the town.

The youth of Prampram, where the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence is located, had vowed to violently make it impossible for the centre to be used as an isolation center for Covid-19.

The GFA's offer of hosting an isolation center for coronavirus patients at its national camping facility is set to be carried out by government after the federation reached an amicable settlement with the chiefs and youth of Prampram.

The GFA's approach of directly engaging the youth has brought the desired results following Sunday's talks and now Okraku says they will hand over the facility to government immediately.

The government has struggled to find places to use as isolation centres as Ghana’s case count rises which prompted the GFA to make the offer to host the patients.

The Centre would serve patients from Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta regions, taking into consideration its strategic location.
