Central Asian Leagues Wrap: Khujand on cloud nine, Mahmudxojiyev’s miracle

Published on: 01 July 2019

Kuala Lumpur: FC Khujand put nine goals past Panjshir in Tajikistan, while Shokhrukh Mahmudxojiyev emerged as the hero to keep Uzbekistan’s Pakhtakor unbeaten on a busy weekend of domestic action in Central Asia.

TAJIKISTAN

FC Khujand’s AFC Cup campaign may have come to a disappointing end last Wednesday, but Vitali Levchenko’s side burst back onto the domestic scene with a blistering 9-0 win over Panjshir on Sunday.

Khujand’s opening blitz totally overwhelmed the visitors, who found themselves 6-0 down with just half an hour gone at 20 Years of Independence Stadium, as Dilshod Vasiev and Tursunali Rustamov both helped themselves to first-half hat-tricks – Rustamov’s treble coming just seven minutes apart.

Vasiev added two more in the second half to take his tally to five for the afternoon, while Firdavs Chakalov also found the net as Khujand recorded the biggest win of the Tajik League season.

Despite Khujand’s day in the sun, FC Istiklol are still the team to beat in Tajikistan. The champions remain eight points clear with a game in hand after their 3-0 win over bottom-placed CSKA Pamir Dushanbe, while Istaravshan took a step away from relegation trouble with a 2-1 victory over Regar-TadAZ Turnsunadze.

UZBEKISTAN

Late heroics from super sub Shokhrukh Mahmudxojiyev gave league leaders Pakhtakor a 2-1 win away to bottom placed Kokand 1912, while PFC Lokomotiv beat Sogdiana Jizzakh 2-0 as Uzbekistan’s big two were made to work hard to continue their Superliga dominance.

Pakhtakor’s unbeaten league season looked under threat when Shakhboz Erkinov gave the hosts an unlikely first half-lead, but Mahmudxojiyev levelled in the 78th minute - just six minutes after replacing Igor Sergeev – before netting a 93rd minute header to keep Shota Arveladze’s men eight points clear on top.

Lokomotiv remain at the head of the chasing pack, but they needed late goals of their own to see off Sogdiana, with Sardor Mirzaev finally breaking the deadlock in the 88th minute, before Jamshid Iskanderov sealed the result in injury time.

Uzbekistan’s top clubs will be in cup action this week, before the league – which is now at its half-way point – returns on the final weekend of July.

KYRGYZ REPUBLIC

Four matches produced just two goals as FC Alay Osh further strengthened their position in a dour but potentially significant weekend of action in the Kyrgyz Premier League.

Mirbek Akhmataliev’s early goal was enough for Alay to pick up all three points on the road to FK Abdish-Ata Kant; a result made all the more valuable by FC Dordoi’s 0-0 stalemate away to FC Neftchi Kochkor-Ata.

Fresh from an excellent 3-0 AFC Cup win over Khujand on Wednesday, Alexander Krestinin’s current side were held by his former outfit, allowing Alay to stretch their lead to eight points, although Dordoi have a game in hand.

Also on Matchday 12, a late goal from Ermek Nusubaliev helped Ilbirs Bishkek into third place following a 1-0 win over Kara-Balta, while FK Akademija-Lider and Alga Bishkek played out a scoreless draw.
