New evidence could acquit Ghanaian footballer Kingsley Sarfo who was jailed in Sweden for having sex with an underage girl, Ghanasoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

A birth certificate, which police believe is credible, shows that the girl may have been 15 at the time the former Malmo FF player slept with her.

In the summer of 2018, the 24-year-old was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison, after an he was convicted of having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

With the age of consent pegged at 15 in Sweden, the former Black Stars player was found guilty of having sex with an underage girl even though it was with her consent.

However, two months ago, it was clear that Sarfo, who played for Sirius and Malmo FF, requested for a retrial through the lawyer Thomas Bodstrom following new evidence.

The lawyer a birth certificate from Ghana where the girl comes from that could prove that the girl was 15 years old (born 2001 instead of 2002) when the act was committed.

The birth certificate was forwarded to the National Forensic Center in Sweden, NFC, for verification.

"Sarfo's chances of being acquitted have increased tremendously," says his lawyer Thomas Bodstrom.

"There is a certificate that shows that she was a year older than previously reported. We applied for the certificate and then forwarded it to the NFC.

"It is important to get an authenticity assessment of NFC, which police and prosecutors use.

"The prosecutor said that the investigation would be opened and so has happened. Therefore, this certificate is absolutely crucial.

"The lawyer who represented the girl during the lawsuits against Kingsley Sarfo has been given the opportunity to face the new duties."
