Chelsea 0-4 Barcelona PLAYER RATINGS: Carter endures hard evening at left-back

Published on: 17 May 2021

Chelsea suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Women's Champions League final.

An early own goal from Melanie Leupolz put Barcelona ahead, with Alexia Putellas later scoring a penalty. Aitiana Bonmati and Caroline Graham Hansen were also on target as Barcelona prevailed.

Sportsmail's Kathryn Batte assesses the best and worst performers.

CHELSEA (4-3-3)

Ann-Katrin Berger - 6

Could do little with the goals she conceded. Needed more protection from her defenders.

Niamh Charles - 5

Struggled up against the experienced Lieke Martens. A step too far for the young full back.

Millie Bright - 6

Was left exposed by those in front of her. Positioning for the fourth goal could have been better.

Magdalena Eriksson - 6

The Blues’ captain was helpless to stop the Barca onslaught. A night to forget in her national team’s stadium.

Jess Carter - 4

Extremely difficult evening for the makeshift left back. Should have done better for the second, third and fourth goals and was given the runaround by Hansen.

Melanie Leupolz - 5

Credited with a freak own goal before giving away a soft penalty. Substituted at half-time.

Sophie Ingle - 5

Couldn’t stop Barca’s midfield dictating the game. Was lucky to get away with a yellow card for a late tackle on Hamraoui.

Ji So-yun - 6

Unusually sloppy in possession and failed to create any significant chances.

Fran Kirby - 6.5

Her clearance cannoned off Leupolz for the opening goal. Got better as the game went on and looked the most likely to create something.

Pernille Harder - 5

Missed two great chances to equalise before Barca went 2-0 ahead then missed another in the second half. A third Champions League final defeat for the Dane.

Sam Kerr - 6

A couple of nice flicks to create Harder’s chances but a quiet night for the WSL Golden Boot winner.

Subs:

Reiten (for Leupolz, 45) - 6

England (for Kerr, 72) - 6

Cuthbert (Ji, 72) - 6

Manager: Emma Hayes - 5

No historic quadruple for the Chelsea coach. Gamble of starting Carter over Andersson didn’t pay off.

Referee:

Riem Hussein (GER)

Reacted to Hermosa’s scream when awarding Barca a harsh penalty which proved crucial. Could have given Eriksson a penalty in the second half.

BARCELONA (4-3-3)

Sandra Panos 6, Marta Torrejon 7, Patricia Guijarro 7, Maria Pilar Leon 7, Leila Ouahabi 7, Aitana Bonmati 8, Kheira Hamraoui 7, Alexia Putellas 8, Lieke Martens 9, Jennifer Hermoso 7, Caroline Graham Hansen 7.5

Subs:

Caldentey (for Graham Hansen, 61) - 6

Losada (for Putellas, 71) - 6

Oshoalo (for Hermosa 71) - 6

Serrano (for Ouahabi 82)

Crnogorčević (for Torrejon, 82)

Manager: Lluis Cortes - 8
