Carlo Ancelotti is optimistic Michael Essien will be fit for Chelsea's local derby against Fulham on Wednesday.

Essien has missed the Blues' last two matches after picking up a toe injury during the 2-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers late last month.

The midfield powerhouse's presence was particularly missed in Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool, but he could return for Fulham'sshort trip to Stamford Bridge.

"He had a problem in the last game in the Premier League on his toe and was not able [to play]," said Ancelotti.

"I hope Wednesday he will be able to play."

Chelsea manager Ancelotti also confirmed that Didier Drogba started on the bench at Liverpool after falling ill overnight.

He added: "Drogba had a fever last night and so was not fit 100 per cent, so I decided to put him [on] just for one part of the game."
