Chelsea, Newcastle United lead tributes in remembering Christian Atsu on 33rd birthday

Former Black Stars winger Christian Atsu has been remembered on the occasion of his 33rd birthday.

Atsu, who passed away two years ago in Turkey following a devastating earthquake on February 6, would have been 33 on Friday, January 10, 2024.

In leading tributes to remember the former Ghana international, Chelsea and Newcastle United posted on social media to observe the day.

"Today we remember Christian Atsu on his birthday," wrote the Blues. Atsu spent four years at Chelsea without making a competitive appearance dur to struggles to settle, spending most of his time on loan.

However, his most successful spell in England was his time at Newcastle United. A club he helped gain promotion to the English Premier League in the 2016/17 season, leading them to the Championship title.

"Today we remember Christian Atsu on his birthday. We miss you, Christian," posted Newcastle United.

Atsu made 65 appearances for the Black Stars, scoring nine goals for the national team.

The Black Stars' account on X posted: "On what would have been your birthday, we remember and celebrate the incredible person and player you were, Christian Atsu. Your legacy with the Black Stars lives on."

The former Chelsea winger made a huge impact in football and beyond that established a legacy of giving back to society. He built an orphanage school in the Central Region before his passing.
