Chelsea release Ghanaian defender Richard Nartey

English born Ghanaian defender Richard Nartey has left Premier League side Chelsea after 12 years with the Blues.

The defender's contract with the London club expired on June 30, leaving him a free agent and could join any club of his choice.

Nartey has been a Chelsea player since he was nine, but spent last season on loan at League One side Burton Albion, where he established himself as a regular.

Reports in the UK suggest after impressing with Burton, it is likely he will ink a permanent deal with the club.

The 21-year old who made 25 appearances for the League One side feels experienced enough for a big move.

"I was always hoping to play as many games as I could but I didn’t think I’d get to play as many as I have done so I’m grateful to the gaffer for giving me the opportunities and having faith in me," he told Chelseafc.com earlier this year.

'I’ve played 25 games now in all competitions and each game I feel better and more confident in just the physical side, which is the biggest thing for me."

Born in London, Nartey helped Chelsea's Under-18s win the FA Youth Cup and Under-18 Premier League in 2016/17 before making over 30 appearances at the development squad age group.
