Chelsea transfer round-up: Doubt over defender's future as club in Tuchel talks

Published on: 21 January 2021

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is running out of time to sign reinforcements in the January transfer window.

And he may also be short of time to prove himself in the Stamford Bridge hotseat following Tuesday's defeat to Leicester.

Chelsea suffered a fifth defeat in eight Premier League outings when they were beaten 2-0 by Brendan Rodgers' side at the King Power Stadium.

The loss has left Lampard's side with a mountain to climb if they are to ensure Champions League qualification - fuelling speculation the manager could be replaced.

Here is a look at the latest transfer news concerning the West London club - including a rumour about Thomas Tuchel being lined up for the Chelsea hotseat.

Chelsea 'hold talks' with Tuchel

It has been claimed that Chelsea have held talks with Thomas Tuchel as the pressure cranks up on Lampard.

Tuchel, who was sacked by PSG last month, is the early bookies' favourite to replace Lampard if Chelsea lose patience with the club legend.

Former Premier League striker Fjortfoft says the club have held preliminary talks with Tuchel about the possibility of becoming the next manager.

He wrote on Twitter : "Agents and Chelsea – representatives have been talking about bringing Tuchel in.

“I understand no decision has been made in terms of Lampard yet, but if he goes Tuchel is seen as the best replacement In the middle of the season.”

Other names being linked with the Stamford Bridge hotseat include Massimiliano Allegri, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl and RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann.

It has been reported that Chelsea would prefer a German-speaking manager who could potentially get the best out of summer signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

Doubt over defender's future

Doubt has been cast over Fikayo Tomori's loan to AC Milan will include an obligation to buy.

Centre-back Tomori was yesterday closing in on a move to the San Siro for the remainder of the season.

It has been reported that the loan will include an option to buy for €25-30million (£23m-£27m).

But Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano says there is no guarantee that Milan will take up that option.

“It’s not guaranteed that Milan will pay €30m for Tomori before the start of next season,” he told R1F, cited by Sempre Milan.

Haaland's dad on son's future

It was reported earlier this week that Chelsea were ready to break the bank to sign Erling Haaland.

The Borussia Dortmund star is on the radar of top clubs from around Europe, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Real Madrid all believed to be keen.

The 20-year-old's dad Alf-Inge has now spoken out about his son's situation - but didn't mention Chelsea.

Instead, he highlighted the similarities between Dortmund and United.

Manchester United have achieved great success in recent years,” Haaland told German outlet Sport1 , cited by the Daily Express.

“The club is also trying to build something new there. But to draw comparison now is not so easy because he (Erling) is already playing in Dortmund.

“These are two very traditional clubs with a large fan base and a glorious history. Man United is a very proud club, just like Dortmund in Germany.”
