CHRIS SUTTON: Olivier Giroud's moment of magic breaks defensive-minded Atletico

Published on: 23 February 2021

Atletico Madrid rocked up with a game-plan to stop Chelsea getting that all-important away goal.

When Atletico didn't have the ball, they put a back five between the visitors and the goal. Occasionally you could pause your television screen and even see a back six.

Joao Felix — Atletico's £113million forward — was acting more like a defensive midfielder! It was working, until Olivier Giroud produced another one of his moments of magic.

The Chelsea striker has a knack for scoring spectacular strikes such as this. He will have one hell of a montage to show the grandkids one day — and what a vital goal to add to his glittering collection this was.

Diego Simeone set his Atletico side up in defensive mode and left Luis Suarez as his furthest man forward for counter-attacks.

The Argentine wanted to stop Chelsea getting that away goal because he felt a 0-0 might suit his side for the second leg. Giroud had other ideas, and what a huge result for Thomas Tuchel.
