Black Stars captain, Jordan Ayew, has named the late Christian Atsu as the best player he has ever played alongside in his career.
Atsu, who was named as the Best Player at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), tragically lost his life in 2023.
The former Chelsea and Newcastle United winger was found under rubble following an earthquake in Turkey, where he was playing professional football.
Quizzed about the best player he has ever played with, Ayew said, “The best player I've ever played with, unfortunately, is no longer with us, and that's Christian [Atsu]. I played with Muntari and Essien,” he told Joy Sports.
“Asamoah [Gyan] and Andre [Ayew] are also up there, but I'll go with Atsu. He didn't get enough plaudits for how good he was on the field.”
Jordan Ayew led the Black Stars to two consecutive wins in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, securing a 5-0 victory against Chad and a 3-0 win over Madagascar.
The captain played a crucial role in Ghana’s success, contributing to five goals, scoring once and providing four assists.
Ghana currently sits atop Group I with 15 points, holding a three-point lead over second-placed Comoros with Madagascar, Mali, the Central African Republic, and Chad trailing behind.
Jordan Ayew will hope to protect his perfect start as Black Stars captain when the Black Stars participate in a four nation tournament in England before taking on Chad and Mali in the Matchdat 7 and 8 fixtures of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September.
