City back on top

Manchester City reclaimed top spot in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Tottenham but the victory came at a price as Kevin de Bruyne picked up an injury.

Phil Foden's first league goal for the Citizens was enough for them to gain a measure of revenge over Spurs after the north London outfit had dumped City out of the Champions League in mid-week.

Foden's fifth minute header was one of just a handful of chances created by the home side, Raheem Sterling failing to convert in the second half as City attempted to put the clash to bed.

Spurs still left the Etihad Stadium empty-handed but only had themselves to blame for failing to convert one of the four excellent opportunities they created, Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen all being denied by Ederson in the Citizens goal.

Boss Pep Guardiola felt it was vital his team came out on top in the lunchtime kick-off, claiming anything other than three points could have killed off their title chances.

"It was a real tough game after our mental defeat on Wednesday and we knew we could have lost the Premier League today," said Guardiola.

"As a footballer, I could not have done what my players have done today. The title is still in our hands.

"We've been on a remarkable run, playing against an incredible team like Tottenham and fighting for the Premier League with the best Liverpool team ever, one of the best teams I've seen in my life."

City have now won their last 10 league matches on the bounce, moving them a point clear of Liverpool, who play on Sunday against Cardiff.

The Reds are 1/5 to pick up the win they need to go back to the top of the Premier League, with the Bluebirds 16/1 and the draw 13/2.

City will hope Cardiff can do them a favour, while also keeping their fingers crossed on Kevin de Bruyne's fitness after he limped off during the first half of Saturday's win.

When asked about de Bruyne's latest injury, Guardiola said: "It was something muscular, which is normal after injuries and three or four games of a lot of minutes with no preparation.

"Maybe he will miss the four games and the FA Cup Final. I don't know how big the impact is."
