City unveil Mombaerts as coach

Melbourne City have appointed Frenchman Erick Mombaerts as their new head coach on a three-year deal.

Mombaerts replaces Warren Joyce, who was let go at the end of last season, after failing to win any silverware for the club in his two campaigns in charge.

The 64-year-old coached Japanese side Yokohama Marinos for three years until last year and before that worked in his homeland.

He had spells in charge of the French U-18 and U-21 sides, while at club level coached Paris Saint-Germain, Guingamp, Cannes and Toulouse.

"I am here to achieve two main objectives - to implement a style of play that gives the team a clear identity, and in doing so to win silverware.

The three managers since the club rebranded from Melbourne Heart to Melbourne City in 2014 have all had win percentages above 40, but none have been able to win either the Premier's Plate or championship.

That is something Mombaerts aims to put right, saying: "I am here to achieve two main objectives - to implement a style of play that gives the team a clear identity, and in doing so to win silverware.

"I know the City style of play inside out. It is my challenge now to bring my experience to Melbourne, which has a different set of players and a different football culture, and to apply it so that we can win."

City CEO Brad Rowse said Mombaerts had enjoyed success in France and Japan while playing the kind of attacking, progressive style the A-League club were striving for.

"His experience and knowledge of the game, and his values and passion to help take the club forward make him the ideal person to guide our pursuit of a maiden A-League title," he added.

"Our ambitions remain unchanged; we want to be constantly competing for silverware and playing in the Asian Champions League."

City have so far signed two players during the off-season - defender Scott Galloway from Adelaide United and former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Craig Noone.

Melbourne City are 5/1 to win the 2020 A-League Grand Final, with Sydney FC 4/1 and Western Sydney Wanderers 12/1.
