Columbus Crew fans slam Jonathan Mensah after defender's error leads to defeat against Atlanta United
Jonathan Mensah

Columbus Crew fans were quick to condemn Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah for his shocking error as The Black & Gold slipped to a 2-0 home defeat in the MLS against Atlanta United.

The Black Stars defender, who was deemed important and recalled from Ghana’s camp ahead of USA friendly to help Columbus overcome Atlanta, ended up infuriating fans as he produced a blunt performance.

Crew fans were left disappointed as Mensah failed to clear his lines and in the process set up Atlanta attacker Tito Villalba to convert for the first goal which propelled the away to claim full spoils at the Mapfre Stadium Columbus, Ohio.

The fans argue Jonathan Mensah should have done better by clearing the ball even though he was under pressure.

Coach Appiah I have said this in another post and I will say it again. It is time to search for new talent on the defensive structure of the Black Stars. Jonathan Mensah made a similar error in Ghana's 2014 World Cup defeat to Germany in Brazil. John Boye has been making similar errors on a consistent basis. The two will play their hearts out but in one critical moment a mistake from them is critical enough to cost Ghana a game. Coach Appiah you have made some statling changes to your technical team but there are still too many assistants. Are these all necessary? There is only one addition I will recommend to help solidify Ghana's defensive woes and I have seen it in both International friendlies, there is a problem in the Ghana defense. Do not go to Congo for the World cup qualifier till it is remedied. Call up the "Rock", John Mensah and add him to your technical team as the defensive coordinator. Ghana has not been able to replicate the role played by John Mensah and it is the missing piece to the puzzle. Let John Mensah comb Ghana for his "clone" and then let him help groom him to play the way John knows how to play. The Black Stars need a sweeper, center full back who is intelligent, cool, calm and collected, an imposing figure in the back. John Boye should play in front of the full back he does not belong on the left full back, right full back or center full back position. He has shown some skills in dribbling and he is also aggressive in attach and can score goals with a header. As a center full back his escapades forward leaves a gap on defense which can be deadly. Add John Mensah to the technical team and find that missing link, a true center full back that can do what John did for the Black Stars. President J J Rawlings, it was OK for goalkeeper Ofori to change his shoes since it started raining and he needed studded cleats/boots for the game. His shoes were not untied he had not foreseen rain so he had cleats designed for regular field play. He is definitely not ghetto, he is one of the best goal keepers I have seen represent our Black Stars. We just need full backs as committed to the cause as he is. A John Mensah calibre center full back.
