Cooper gives Lions late win at 10-man Blades

Published on: 19 October 2021

Jake Cooper scored an injury-time winner for Millwall for the second time this season, having also done so against Blackpool in August

Jake Cooper's superb injury-time goal gave Millwall victory against 10-man Sheffield United.

The visitors took the lead in unlikely fashion when Jed Wallace's fiercely hit cross from the right wing caught out home goalkeeper Robin Olsen and flew into the far corner of the net.

The Blades levelled just before the break when Billy Sharp slotted in a penalty after Scott Malone had felled John Fleck in the area.

Morgan Gibbs-White was sent off for the hosts after being shown a second yellow card for simulation and with the game seemingly heading for a draw, Cooper thumped home a brilliant strike from outside the area.

The win lifted Gary Rowett's men up to 10th in the table, while the Blades are 15th and have lost three of their seven home matches this campaign.

Millwall took the lead in the 11th minute through Wallace's fifth goal of the season, though it is unlikely he was going for goal from just inside the touchline.

United boss Slavisa Jokanovic made a change before the break, with Conor Hourihane making way for Iliman Ndiaye, and his side levelled before the interval through Sharp's firmly struck spot-kick.

The hosts picked up where they had left off in the second half but David McGoldrick failed to convert from close range and their momentum was halted when Wolves loanee Gibbs-White was sent off for diving, having been booked in the first half for a foul.

Mason Bennett had a great chance to put the Lions back in front after Olsen had parried a Wallace effort, but his miss proved to be immaterial as Cooper lashed home an injury-time winner for the second time this season.

For the second successive match Jokanovic left England Under-21 striker Rhian Brewster, who is yet to score a league goal for the club since joining from Liverpool for £23.5m last October, out of the match-day squad.
