COVID-19: Ghana coach CK Akonnor must accept salary pay cut- Sports Minister

Ghana's Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah has disclosed that the Ministry can not afford to pay head coach of the Black Stars Charles Kwabla Akonnor his full salary due to the financial difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Ghana coach is on a $25,000 monthly salary but has not being paid for the past nine months since taking up the role.

Akonnor is yet to sit on the bench for the Black Stars after his first assignment for the team was postponed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.

Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah has confirmed in an interview that the Ministry is in talks with the Ghana FA on Akonnor's salary issue as they want the coach to take a pay cut.

“The Sports Ministry and the Ghana Football Association are negotiating that we reduce his salary during these difficult times", Isaac Asiamah said on Adom TV.

“I know he [CK Akonnor] will agree because we are not in normal times, I will not lie. The truth is that we cannot pay CK Akonnor’s full salary in these difficult times,” he added.
