COVID-19: Gov’t does not care about our investment- Bechem United CEO

Bechem United Chief Executive Officer, Kwasi Darlington says the government does not care about the investment of club owners and administrators in the country thus the neglect in restarting football amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Government’s measures in easing down restrictions have seen some social entities such as markets, churches, schools, mosques, and non-contact sports resuming their activities by observing the protocols while football which is the passion of the nations is still suspended.

While other leagues across the globe have restarted their leagues amid the pandemic with games being played behind closed doors, some Ghanaian club administrators were hoping the government would have given the green light for clubs to begin training ahead of the league restart.

President Akufo-Addo’s recent directives on measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus and easing of restrictions once again saw football missing out of the list.

According to Professor Kwasi Darlington, it is worrying when social distancing rules are flouted at the market and public places but football which can be organized properly is still suspended.

“What stops us from playing behind closed doors or with limited fans at the stadium. Our Covid-19 situation is different from the others and the mortality rate is lower which is very encouraging to hear more recoveries”, he told Asempa FM.

“We the club administrators are suffering because we keep on paying salaries and wages without any activity which is affecting us. The government does not see our contribution to the country hence the neglect”, he added.

Football clubs are yet to receive any support from the Ghana Football Association or government amid the pandemic.
