COVID-19: Use the break to secure sponsorship for the GPL- Bashiru Hayford

Former Asante Kotoko coach Bashiru Hayford has suggested to the Ghana Football Association(GFA) to use the COVID-19 induced break to search for and secure sponsorship for the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

According to him, the financial crisis brought about by the pandemic will have a negative impact on the league, including the welfare of coaches and players.

He is, therefore, making a case for the season to be annulled and for a new season to be started when the FA has secured a headline sponsor for the league.

“I will advice the FA to cancel the league and use this time to seek for good sponsorship so they can package next season well. When we resume the league, we the coaches are going to suffer a lot because we are not like Europeans”, he said in an interview.

He added that the training facilities and the stadia to be used are in a bad shape at the moment due to the absence of football thus it will take time for these facilities to be put in good shape for football to restart.

“At the moment we don’t have good facilities for training and facilities for testing and examining us for the coronavirus. All that I want to say is that the GFA should cancel the league and plan well for next season”, he added.

The 2019/20 Ghana Premier League has been suspended since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Ghana Football Association has announced it will make a decision on the future of the season by July 30 on whether to truncate or continue with the season.
