Crown Aduana Stars league champions if GPL is cancelled - Yahaya Mohammed

Aduana Stars forward Yahaya Mohammed says his side should be crowned league champions if the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League (GPL) is truncated due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ghana's President Akufo-Addo in his 10th address on measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus extended the ban on sporting activities till July 31 which has seen many club administrators urging the Ghana FA  to cancel the season due to time factor as there are plans to synchronize the local football calendar with that of the Europeans.

Yahaya Mohammed, a contender for the Goal King award in the suspended league, said the Dormaa-based club should be declared champions per their standing on the league log if the season is cancelled.

"I would suggest that the Ghana FA takes the decision to continue the league. However, if the Ghana FA decide to cancel the league, the trophy must be given to Aduana Stars since we are on top of the league log": he told Angel FM.

According to sources, the FA is hoping to continue with the season behind closed doors as a move to cancel the season may lead to some serious legal implications from it sponsors.

The 2019/20 football season has been suspended since March this year due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The current season is in limbo as there is no clear data on when football will be safe to return.

The GFA is still engaging its stakeholders on the future of the Ghana Premier League and has announced it will make a decision on whether to continue or truncate the season on June 30.
