Curtis Jones dedicates Sheffield Utd goal to Alisson's father after tragic death

Curtis Jones paid tribute to goalkeeper Alisson and his late father after netting in Liverpool’s victory over Sheffield United last night.

Alisson was missing at Bramall Lane after his dad tragically drowned back in Brazil earlier in the week.

Without him Jones’ second ever Premier League goal, and an own-goal from Kean Bryan, secured three points that takes Jurgen Klopp’s side to within two points off the top four.

‘It’s been a difficult time for me and the rest of the team but I’m happy to get on scoresheet,’ Jones, 20, said.

‘This goal is for Ally's dad, may he rest in peace. If Ally sees this, this is for you.’

Jones added: ‘He’s a strong lad, a big player for the team. He’s not here today but we miss him for sure and I’d like to take this time to dedicate my goal to him, his dad and the rest of his family.’

This win meant Liverpool ended a run of four consecutive league defeats

Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale had frustrated the visitors during the first half, making vital saves from Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Chris Wilder's side actually had the ball in the net after Ozan Kabak diverted a through-ball beyond Adrian – playing in place of Alisson. But Oli McBurnie was rightly flagged offside.

Then, three minutes into the second half, Jones finally made the breakthrough with a drilled finish. Sheffield United players protested that the ball had gone behind before Alexander-Arnold pulled it back but VAR confirmed the goal should stand.

‘I’ve always said I’m a player who likes to assist and score goals, the time is right now,’ Jones added.

‘All in all, it was a good team performance. We get three points and we go again… today was a good example of putting it all together.’

Sadio Mane later had a second ruled out for offside before McBurnie missed a glorious chance to equalise.

United were made to pay when fine interplay between Firmino and Mane ended with the Brazilian screwing a shot towards goal.

His effort would have gone wide but for a deflection off Bryan which lifted it over Ramsdale.

‘We gave everything tonight. For the first half and most of the second half we gave a good account of ourselves,’ Ramsdale said after the bottom side's 21st league defeat of the season.

‘It's definitely a disappointing dressing room because we could possibly have got something out of that.’
