Dan Quaye advises Andre Ayew - Take lessons from Stephen Appiah as Black Stars captain

Former Ghana defender Dan Quaye has urged current Black Stars captain Andre Ayew to take lessons from former skipper Stephen Appiah.

Appiah is touted as one of the best persons to lead the Black Stars as captain.

The former Juventus, Fenerbahce, Brescia midfielder wore the armband until late 2010 when he was out of the Ghana team as injuries affected his form.

Appiah led the Black Stars to the very first FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006 in Germany where they finished at the round of 16 stage.

Captaincy issues are said to have costed Ghana most times at major tournaments with the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations final always cited as reference.

The captaincy feud that ensued between Asamoah Gyan and coach Kwesi Appiah ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt is also another example.

The Black Stars suffered elimination in the round of 16 after losing to Tunisia on penalties.

Quaye says Ayew will succeed as skipper of Ghana if he tap into the leadership examples of Stephen Appiah.

"As for leadership, that's why I said they should learn from Stephen Appiah," Quaye told Citi FM.

"I remember when we were camp during the 2006 World Cup qualifications and the tournament itself in Germany.

"You won't see him (Stephen Appiah) being boastful that he is captain or maybe controlling the other players.

"We ate together and did everything together.

"As a captain you always set example,"

"If we are on the field, you are the boss as the captain but outside the field you are not the boss again.

"You have to cooperate with everybody and that makes you a good leader."

Quaye, a former right back was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

He also won several laurels at club level with Hearts of Oak, including the 2000 CAF Champions League and the 2004 CAF Confederation Cup.
