DC United's Mohammed Abu season over after horrible knee injury

D.C. United midfielder Mohammed Abu has suffered a knee injury which is likely to rule him out of the rest of the MLS regular season.

The defensive midfielder tore the medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his left knee during last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Toronto FC.

DC United confirmed Abu suffered a grade 3 MCL injury, a complete tear that typically requires surgery and four to eight weeks of recovery.

The incident occurred just before halftime when he slid into Pablo Piatti as the Toronto midfielder attempted to shoot from the top of the penalty area.

''It was a brave play from him, but the power of the strike, I think his knee gave way a little bit,'' Coach Ben Olsen said Saturday.

The club have not set a timetable for his return.

The MLS regular season will end November 8, which is less than seven weeks away.
