Video: Desailly in shocking claim on why he didn't play for Ghana

Published on: 17 December 2010

Ex-France captain Marcel Desailly has shockingly revealed that he did not play for Ghana because football in the country was not organized.

The former Chelsea and AC Milan ace was born in the West African country and there has been a recent strong clamor for him to coach the Black Stars.

But Desailly’s revelation is bound to stir massive controversy over his commitment to Ghana as he claimed he is committed to the West African country.

Explaining for the first time why he didn’t play for the Black Stars, Desailly said he did not consider Ghana because football in the country was messy.

“In 1986 France was the obvious one in front of me and Ghana was not organized enough for me to think of becoming Ghanaian as a football player,” Desailly said.

“It was obvious.

“From 13 years old I was already in the formation centre and I grew up slowly slowly.

“I was already in the national team when I was 13 years old. So I was growing up into the French national team.

“There was no chance. Ghana was not in the market.”

Desailly’s revelation is bound to stir mixed reaction as his quest to coach the Black Stars could be seen by some as opportunism.

But others could support him because he could have missed the massive strides in his career if he played for the Black Stars.

He only expressed interest to coach the Ghana national team at the time that the country has been recognized as one of the best in the world.
