Diego Conde: Atletico Madrid are one of the top five clubs in the world

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Diego Conde has underlined the physical demands he is put under at the club.

The 21-year-old currently plays for Atletico's B team and is sometimes invited to train with the first team.

"Atletico are one of the top five clubs in the world and the physical preparation is extreme," Conde said.

"We work very well, or so we've been taught.

"[Fitness coach] Profe [Ortega] puts a lot of emphasis on coordination, strength and resistance.

"The data of distance run by Atletico players during matches beats any other team in the world.

"Profe values strength because, in the end, football is a contact sport and there are clashes, duels, altercations, tussles and it's important to be strong in order to win these duels.

"He demands not only a physical level but also that bite when making decisions in a quick, mental way."

Conde also explained how Atletico's players are being asked to train while confined in their homes during the coronavirus crisis.

"The objective isn't going to be to improve," he noted.

"You're never going to be able to improve at home like you are on the pitch, especially with conditioning and with the ball.

"The objective of this work is to lose as little as possible or create a base that you can't lose when we'll be able to get back to training and matches."
