Dier says Tottenham are more 'pragmatic' under Mourinho than they were before

Eric Dier believes Tottenham can continue to build and end their long wait for a Premier League title under Jose Mourinho's leadership.

Spurs have been on the fringes of success but haven't won a trophy since the 2007-08 League Cup, with their last league title coming inthe 1960-61 season.

But after an impressive campaign so far the north London outfit are sitting near the top of the table, and could lead the pack with a draw or win over Chelsea in their crunch clash at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

This season has seen a handful of top sides suffering indifferent form, and with no clear favourite for the title Dier is optimistic that Mourinho can end their barren run.

'I'd say this team is probably more pragmatic. I think we still possess a lot of the qualities we had during that spell (under previous manager Mauricio Pochettino), I think we're all a bit older, a bit more mature and we're ready to do different things compared to when you're younger.' He told Sky Sports.

'I feel like it's a much more mature team, and the depth of the squad is not something I've seen during my time here. The amount of quality we have coming off the bench, and not even in the squad, is incredible.

'That competition is definitely driving things, and I think that's something in the past we struggled with. You want to have your own self-motivation, but you can't deny it's different when it's a big squad and everyone is driving each other.

'Mourinho is definitely putting his stamp on the club, on the team and the players individually. He wants us to be a representation of himself. Tough is definitely one of the words I'd use to describe him, and this team.'

After they lost the 2018-19 Champions League final to Liverpool, Spurs struggled for form and consistency, but they have now come through that period according to Dier.

'Last season was just a difficult time, even when the new manager came in, it definitely wasn't easy. It definitely feels like we're building something new, I feel like the foundations are there, and it's up to us to make it what we want it to be.'

Tottenham travel to Chelsea on Sunday and a draw or win will be enough for them reclaim top spot in the Premier League.
